Ulaanbaatar, March 1, 2023 /MONTSAME/. On March 1, World Civil Defense Day is celebrated globally every year to create awareness about the importance of civil defense and to appreciate the sacrifices of those who have laid their lives in the line of duty as civil defense volunteers or workers. The day aims to honor those who serve in civil protection and bring the attention of the global communities to the necessity of civil protection in the world.


The International Civil Defense Organization (ICDO) is an intergovernmental organization to contribute to the development States of structures ensuring the protection and assistance of the population and safeguarding property and the environment from natural or man-made disasters. 


These structures are generally known as civil protection, civil defense, and civil safety and are all concerned with the management of emergencies. 


The International Civil Defense Organization was founded in 1931. It has 60 member states, 16 observer states, and 23 affiliated members in Geneva, Switzerland. 


The theme announced by the ICDO for this year is – “The role of information technology in risk assessment.”


In 1992, Mongolia joined the ICDO as an observer state, and became an official member state in 2002
