17,161 candidates vying for local council elections nationwide

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The polling day for the 2020 elections of the Citizens’ Representatives’ Khurals (local council) of aimags, capital city, soums and districts is scheduled on October 15, Thursday, and the election campaign is currently running nationwide through October 13, Tuesday. 

Last week, U.Ganbold, Chair of the Election Commission of Ulaanbaatar city provided update on the preparation for the local council elections of the capital city and its 9 districts.  

According to him, a total of 827 candidates from 7 political parties and coalitions (Mongolian People’s Party, Democratic Party, Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party, Green Party, KHUN Party, World Mongolians, ‘Sahigtun! Constitution 19’ coalition), including two independents (J.Ganbaatar and D.Munkh-Erdene), had been confirmed to run for the district level and capital city-level elections of Citizens’ Representatives’ Khurals. 

In particular, 131 candidates are running for 45 mandates of the Ulaanbaatar city’s Citizens’ Representatives Khural, divided into 23 electoral constituencies, while 696 candidates are participating in the elections of district-level Citizens Representatives Khurals for 1,291 available seats in 152 electoral constituencies.  

On October 6, Ulaanbaatar city’s Election Commission handed over candidacy cards to 27 candidates of ‘KHUN’ – National Labor Party to participate in the elections of the Ulaanbaatar city’s Citizens Representative Khurals. On September 29, the primary level court of the capital city suspended the resolution on the approval of participation of KHUN Party in the 2020 election of Citizens’ Representative Khurals. However, a preliminary hearing took place again on October 5, at the capital city’s primary level court to revoke the court’s initial ordinance, allowing the KHUN Party to participate in the elections. 

For the 2020 local council elections of Mongolia, there are 816 mandates for aimag and capital city-level Citizens’ Representative Khurals, while 7,339 seats are available at soum and district-level Citizens’ Representative Khurals.

In aimag-level Citizens’ Representative Khural elections, 1,770 candidates are running for 771 seats divided into 545 election constituencies, while in soum-level elections, 14,564 candidates are vying for 7,048 mandates in 1,634 constituencies, according to the General Election Commission.
