Importance of women’s participation in politics highlighted

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Minister of Health and President of Social Democracy-Mongolian Women’s Association D.Sarangerel received Fernando Vertoa, group member of experts on Political Parties of OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
Mr. Fernando Vertoa is an international expert, who is giving counsel on a draft law on Political Party in directions of making political party system democratic, open and accountable.
MP D.Sarangerel noted that women actively work towards ensuring gender equality, increasing women’s participation in politics and decreasing rate of domestic violence. We are backing up your recommendations and requests on making political party system accountable and increasing involvement of minority group, women and persons with disabilities in decision-making process. Support and partnership of international organizations are important for us to encourage women’s participation in political decision-making level.
In response, Mr. Fernando Vertoa said that it is necessary to develop and carry out long-term policy and programs besides giving quote of running for the election in order to support women’s participation in politics. It is effective to use mechanisms to support women’s participation through state policy.
In his recommendation he mentioned the necessity to reflect issues in the bill on Political parties including setting women’s quote in executive positions of party, holding the balance of gender ratio of candidates as well as introducing financial incentives.
Stressing that increasing women’s participation in politics and ensuring gender equality is significant to formation of democracy in Mongolia, Mr. Fernando Vertoa expressed his readiness to collaborate with government and non-government organizations in this direction.
