Asia Power Grid can be built in Gobi region

The Sixth International Conference of the ‘Ulaanbaatar Dialogue on Northeast Asian Security’ wrapped up on June 6.

The conference brought together over 200 representatives comprising government officials and scholars from 14 countries including Russia, China, Japan, Canada, and Sweden as well as international organizations such as the United Nations, European Union and International Committee of the Red Cross.

“The conference involved a large number of government officials for the first time in its history. Furthermore, the conference participants thoroughly discussed the ways for ensuring peace and sustainability in Northeast Asia. Broad discussions were held about cooperation in disaster reduction, promoting youth inclusion in strengthening peace, economic cooperation, especially in energy sector.”

The conference had eight sub-sessions and the future prospect of Northeast Asian energy cooperation was one of the key topics at a roundtable meeting of government officials.

“The sides actively expressed their views and positions on cooperating in human welfare. Regarding the development of energy cooperation, European countries shared their experience in a technical session. The parties reached consensus to advance Mongolia’s initiative on energy cooperation” 

The issue of energy being touched upon during the conference in addition to the Northeast Asian security and economic cooperation was very timely, said Wang Yongzhong, World Energy Department, Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

“This year’s international conference was of great significance. Mongolia and Russia have abundant energy resources. On the other side, China, South Korea, and Japan have very high energy consumption. It denotes the opportunity for the expansion of the regional countries’ energy cooperation. The representatives pointed out the feasibility of implementing Mongolia’s initiative to build Asia Power Grid in the Gobi region. China is ready to share its technology experience in transferring and using renewable energy.”

The international conference was jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institute for Strategic Studies.
