Cooperation with Japan in disaster risk reduction discussed

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On the sidelines of the Asian Ministerial Conference, Deputy Prime Minister U.Enkhtuvshin held bilateral meeting with head of Japanese delegation, Vice Minister of State for Disaster Management Jiro Akama.  
 
Deputy PM expressed aspiration to develop economic ties between Mongolia and Japan to a new level and informed that Mongolia is giving significance to increase benefit of Economic Partnership Agreement which is being implemented since 2016 between the two countries. At the end of 2017, trade turnover between Mongolia and Japan reached USD 377.9 million, however, it is not sufficient as export volume of Mongolia was USD 14.8 million, said the Deputy Minister.
 
He added that cooperation in emergency management sector is one of the important sectors of bilateral relations. “Mongolia has willingness to closely cooperate with Japan in reducing disaster risks.”
 
“The both sides should make efforts to intensify and develop relations and cooperation as we are strategic partners and the third neighbors. Moreover, necessity to reduce disaster risk will increase as much as Ulaanbaatar city expands year by year, and we will cooperate and focus on empowering this sector and making investment,“ Mr.Jiro Akama said.


 
Later, the Deputy Minister met with Vice Minister of Emergency Management of China Zheng Guoguang to discuss about intensifying and deepening cooperation between emergency management agencies of the two countries.
 
The Deputy PM expressed his request to collaborate in re-establishing an Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in fighting  crossborder steppe and forest fires in which was established in 1999 as well as to hold joint exercise between corresponding organizations of the two countries to extinguish crossborder steppe and forest fires urgently, to enhance local firefighting potential as well as to implement projects to supply firefighting equipment.    
 
Mr. Zheng Guoguang said he is backing the Deputy Minister’s position while expressing China's readiness to join all documents to be released at the Conference.
