Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A working group responsible for introduction of international standard taxi service in Ulaanbaatar held a meeting on February 26, addressing challenges in taxi service in the capital city and seeking ways to improve.

Mayor of Ulaanbaatar S.Batbold forwarded the initiative to reform taxi service and formed a designated working group. The meeting was attended by D.Munkh-Erdene, senior advisor to the Mayor, representatives of the capital city Transport Department, the Ulaanbaatar Development Corporation JSC and taxi service companies and citizens.

Head of the working group and senior advisor D.Munkh-Erdene said, “Within the action plan objectives of the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, the taxi service in Ulaanbaatar will progress to a new level.”

The open discussion touched upon the current state of taxi service in Ulaanbaatar, comparative study involving taxi service in neighbor countries and the future directions in taxi service policy.

The participating taxi companies and citizens raised suggestions and initiatives on the introduction of technological innovation in taxi including GPS and smart payment system.

The citizens also pointed out that the 28 taxi parking lots in the city are insufficient for 1.3 million residents, whereas the capital city administration expressed its intention to increase the number of taxi parking lots. As of 2017, 539 official taxis of 11 companies were serving the residents of Ulaanbaatar.

Recommendations and suggestions made at the symposium regarding ways to improve the state of taxi service will find reflection in future projects and policies to be brought forward.
