Gobi regional forum organized in Dalanzadgad

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of mining sector in Mongolia, the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry has been organizing regional forums. Earlier, central and eastern regional forums were held in Erdenet, Orkhon aimag and in Baruun-Urt, Sukhbaatar aimag respectively.
Last weekend, November 11-12, the Ministry organized a Gobi regional forum in Dalanzadgad, Umnugobi aimag.
It was a broad-range event, bringing together more than 300 participants, including ministers of relevant sectors, MPs, governors of Umnugobi, Dornogobi, Dundgobi and Bayankhongor aimags, representatives from Erdenes Tavantolgoi Company, Oyutolgoi LLC, Tavantolgoi Company, Shivee-Ovoo Company, Erdenet Mining Corporation, SESMIM Project, the UN Mongolia, as well as ‘Responsible Mining Initiative for Sustainable Development’ NGO.
Opening the forum, Mining and Heavy Industry Minister D. Sumyabazar said, “Underground wealth is a property of Mongolians. Mongolians must be benefited from its yields. Operations of major state-owned companies, such as Erdenet, Oyutolgio, Tavantolgoi, Baganuur and Shivee-Ovoo, will be improved, making them beneficial to every citizen. The companies will be limited liability companies through the stock market and developed into open companies with good governance. This forum aims to enable civil organization, local administrations, license-holders and professional associations to discuss together about pressing issues of the region, correct misunderstandings in the sector and publicize the sector’s policy and purposes.”
During the event, relevant state policies and legislations were introduced and participants shared views on pressing issues and impacts of mining sector in local development and on cooperation of mining companies and local administrations and citizens.
The mining sector makes up over 30 percent of the state budget revenue, 18 percent of the GDP, 86 percent of total exports and 71 percent of gross industrial products. As of first nine months of 2017, the income from mining and extractive industries has reached MNT6.9 trillion.
