Minister of Environment and Tourism meets MCC delegates

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On May 11, D.Oyunkhorol, Minister of Environment and Tourism received delegates headed by Fatema Z. Sumar, Regional Deputy Vice President for Europe, Asia, Pacific and Latin America in the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) Department of Compact Operations, Mark Sundberg, Deputy Vice President and Chief Economist at MCC and Jonathan Brooks, Managing Director for Europe, Asia, Pacific and Latin America of MCC.  
 
At the meeting, the MCC delegates introduced about the process of developing a second compact and decisions made by the MCC’s Investment Management Committee, which held its meeting on April 5. The Committee discussed the proposed projects and programs forwarded by the government of Mongolia for water supply and concluded to study the activities if the projects and programs in the next level and draw up feasibility studies.

In accordance with the decision, the MCC and the Mongolian government established an agreement on nonrefundable aid and its performance for the development of the second compact, which laid out a program of water supply infrastructure of Ulaanbaatar city. Particularly, the program will focus on increasing the water supply of Ulaanbaatar with ground water sources, wastewater recycling for industrial purpose, politic and institutional reform in the water sector and improving the legal environment. 

At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister D.Oyunkhorol pointed out that bilateral ties between Mongolia and the US are being strengthened, especially in the environmental field and requested the MCC delegates to pay attention to reduce soil and water pollution in ger districts of Ulaanbaatar city in the future.
