Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Opening ceremony for the “Whole Liver –Mongolia” National Program took place last Friday, May 5, at the central square of Ulaanbaatar. The program for improving liver health was approved by the cabinet on April 12.

In his remarks, Prime Minister J.Erdenebat said “Although the country’s economy faces challenges, the government is commencing a program that would enforce comprehensive measures for detecting and treating Hep-C infections, one of the key causes of liver cancer and cirrhosis. The government program will aim for improving knowledge about Hepatitis infections, changing public’s behavior and earlier detection of infections and cancer, as well as for eliminating the factors that lead to hepatitis infections in the future”.

A goal has been set by the government to have cured 150 patients infected with Hep-C and dramatically reduced death rate caused by liver cirrhosis and cancer by 2020.
Citizens of 40-65 years of age will be tested for Hepatic viruses free-of-charge in 2017, and people of 15-39 years of age and 65 or older citizens are going to enjoy the same discount on hepatitis tests in 2018. Moreover, in the margin of Whole Liver –Mongolia Program, pharmaceutical supplies for hepatitis and liver treatment will be discounted by health insurance and live transplant operations will be covered by government.

According to statistics, 2,160 out of the 5,991 total recorded cancer cases in 2016 were liver cancer. On average of the past 10 years, 2,600 people died of liver cancer, which means liver cancer has been claiming seven lives each day, in Mongolia. The study, conducted jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO), shows that there might be about 400 thousand people with hepatic viruses.
