Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ “Gobi Great Six” half-year meeting took place in Ulaanbaatar on April 18 to discuss works carried-out, ongoing measures and actions to be performed within the framework of protection of the endangered Gobi Great six species, wild Bactrian Camel, Gobi Bear, Takhi or Wild Horse, Khulan or Wild Ass and Saiga Antelope. The species are symbols of well-being and health of the Gobi ecosystems.

The half-year meeting was attended by delegates from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, organizations in Mongolia running their activities to protect environment and nature, the authorities of Governor’s Office and Citizens Representative Khurals of Bayankhongor, Gobi-Altai, Khovd and Zavkhan aimags and Khustai National Park, the Center for reintroduction of Takhi in Takhi Steppe, the Association for Takhi Conversation (France) and the Administration of Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area’s parts “A” and “B”.

At the meeting, scholars and researchers introduced the importance and value of these six endangered animals and jointly approved a declaration named “Takhiin tal” or “Takhi Steppe”. During the meeting, they delivered presentations about the implementation and future plans of the “Gobi Great Six” campaign and speeches under the theme “Present situations and challenges of the protection” and “Rehabilitation of Ekh River oasis”.

An event “Gobi Great Six” was organized last September at the initiative of the WWF Mongolia Program Office in order to refill the knowledge gap, protect the ecosystem of these animals, revere importance of these endangered species of the Gobi and unite efforts of public and NGOs and local residents.
