Civil society and medical professionals raising awareness of hepatic diseases

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ L.Enkh-Amgalan MP, the head of Standing committee on Social policy, education, Culture and Sciences, and S.Chinzorig and Ts.Tsogzolmaa MPs received on Wednesday representatives of non-governmental healthcare organizations and medical scholars and researchers, at the State Palace.

Chair of the Board of the “Onom” Hepatic Research Foundation, Dr D.Naranbaatar noted that liver disease rate in Mongolia has reached a disastrous level, with 2,800 Mongolians dying of hepatic illnesses per year and seven -- each day, on average. This means that hepatic diseases only are the main cause of 15% percent of death.  According to a survey, 400 thousand people are infected with Hepatitis B and C.

Fortunately, thanks to the efforts by national physicians and scientists, 40 thousand people have been tested recently for Hepatitis viruses through the latest medical technologies. Some 5,000 patients are treated and another 4,000 have begun treatment.

“Buten (Whole) Liver Mongolia” NGO representatives informed that they have been presenting this issue to the political parties and appealing the politicians to take liver health issue to their platform actions.

After this, Dr. and Prof. Ya.Dagvadorj, President of the Hepatic Doctors’ Society of Mongolia, Dr. and Prof. G.Zulhkuu, the Vice President of the Society, Clinical Prof. D.Batdelger, member of Board of the Society, and Dr. D.Enkhtuvshin, the Chief Executive, as well as the “One Mongolia” NGO’s director T.Gantogtokh and the head “Onom” Foundation’s Prevention Team E.Erdenebileg shared their positions on this issue.

In the end of the meeting, head of the Standing committee L.Enkh-Amgalan MP expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to meet with the representatives of the civil societies, doctors and scientists, who are raising awareness for hepatic diseases for the well-being of fellow Mongolians, on this celebration of the World Hepatitis Day (July 28). “The Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) has reflected in its platform issues the measures for reducing the sources of Hepatitis C infections and furthermore its eradication, ways of early diagnosis and medical service for all who are in need”, he said.

He promised that the Standing committee will work closely with the collective of healthcare sector and civil societies on timely launch of the “Whole Liver Mongolia” program, and, in the regard, on sophisticating the legal grounds for smooth implementation.
