Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Government resolution No 189 that bans import, sale, production and use of disposable plastic bags came into effect from March 1.

Professional Inspection Department of Ulaanbaatar city reports that inspectors are conducting on the spot inspection and supervision of the implementation of the ban.

According to the inspectors, sellers have awareness on the plastic bag ban, even though, they have trouble with substituting it. The Government ban prohibits single-use plastic bags thinner than 0.035 mm nationwide.

By restricting all sources of these plastic bags that influence adversely to the nature and environment, it forces sellers, producers and customers to use better quality plastic bags or thicker than 0.035 mm. In case of breaching the ban, individual and entities will be fined from MNT300.000 to MNT 1 million.

Head of Green Development and Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism T.Bulgan emphasizes the decision aims to stop daily use of plastic bags gradually.
