Irrigation system to be improved in Bayannuur and Sagsai soums

Bayan-Ulgii /MONTSAME/ The Government of Mongolia, Asian
Development Bank, and the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction have begun the USD
46.2 million project ‘Vegetable Production and Irrigated Agriculture’ in 19
soums of 11 aimags including Bayannuur and Sagsai soums of Bayan-Ulgii aimag.
The project aimed at increasing the efficiency of climate-resilient
agricultural production and marketing and supporting small-scale family crop
farmers will be carried out between 2020 and 2026.
As part of the project, irrigation system covering a total
of 560 hectares will be upgraded and cooperatives of vegetable farmers will be
formed and the farmers will be upskilled in the above-mentioned two soums.
According to the Food and Agriculture Department of Bayan-Ulgii
aimag, the project plan has been approved.
4 crop farmers’ cooperatives of not less than 10 members
will be established in each soum and provided water-efficient
irrigation equipment and climate-resilient vegetable seeds, thus increasing crop
production by 12 percent.
