Agriculture Minister instructs provincial governors

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry P.Sergelen gave instructions to provincial governors regarding summering and wintering preparations.
During a video conference on July 27, Thursday, the Minister informed the governors on the state of summering conditions across the country, and assigned them to take certain measures to ensure full preparation for the winter such as adopting a plan to reduce the damage from possible natural hazards, making adequate hay after mutual agreement with soum authorities, and establishing agreements with corresponding organizations after determining the number of herding households to winter in encampment areas and border zone.
An Information and Research Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment report shows that Mongolia observed weather 2.2 degrees warmer than the multi-year average in May, and 2.8 degrees warmer in June this year. “It was a heat wave unseen since 1960”, Minister P.Sergelen said.
As of July 20, about 150 soums in 16 aimags including Khovd, Gobi-Altai, Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai, Bulgan, Tuv and Bayan-Ulgii are in drought, and about 50 soums in aimags including Uvs, Zavkhan, Khuvsgul, Bayankhongor, Bulgan and Khentii are in a milder drought condition.
On the national level, 61.5 million livestock were counted at the end of 2016, and 21.9 million offspring are growing healthily as of the first half of 2017. Corresponding organizations have estimated that about 66 million livestock will winter this year.
In order to ensure full preparation for winter and the spring, a Cabinet resolution ‘Some measures to be taken to ensure the 2018 winter and spring preparations in livestock sector’ was issued and has been delivered to every province.
Minister P.Sergelen also tasked provincial governors to generate a fodder reserve, prevent from contagious livestock diseases, send a preliminary report on crop, and ensure full readiness of equipment.
