Ulaanbaatar, September 10, 2024 /MONTSAME/. On September 10, 2024, Mongolia marked the Day of Tribute to the Victims of Political Repression for the 29th year.

On this day, Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai, Prime Minister of Mongolia, Purevdorj Bukhchuluun, Deputy Chairman of the State Great Khural and Chair of the State Commission on Rehabilitation (SCR), Members of the State Great Khural and Government, SCR officials as well as the relatives of the repressed paid respects and laid wreaths at the Monument for the Politically Repressed.

In 1996, the State Great Khural of Mongolia issued a resolution to mark every September 10 as the Day of Tribute to the Victims of Political Repression. As of now, over 31400 victims of political repression have been rehabilitated.

The Monument for the Politically Repressed, situated in front of the National Museum of Mongolia, was sculpted by artist L.Bold in 1997, using copper repoussé technique. The Monument stands as a witness to the sorrow and regret, the relentless search for truth, the tears long held back, and the tragic history that took the lives of national intellectuals, scientists, and Buddhist monks. By Resolution No. 197 of the Citizens’ Representative Khural of Ulaanbaatar City, the Monument was placed under the protection of Chingeltei district in 2007.

On a plate next to the Monument, the following words are inscribed:

“May no Mongolian ever forget the years,

Of lost hope and broken hearts,

The nightmare-like years,

The sorrowful years of despair!”
