Ulaanbaatar, September 28, 2023 /MONTSAME/. Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations Enkhbold Vorshilov addressed the High-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons held on September 26, 2023, on the margins of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Permanent Representative Enkhbold emphasized that Mongolia's nuclear-weapon-free status is making a significant contribution to international efforts to disarm, prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, and the complete elimination. He stressed that establishing nuclear-weapon-free zones is the most effective way to completely eliminate nuclear weapons.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis, and representatives of UN member states attended the High-level plenary meeting.

The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons has been observed annually since 2014. Pursuant to the resolutions of the General Assembly, Member States, the United Nations system, and civil society, including non-governmental organizations, academia, parliamentarians, the mass media, and individuals are encouraged to commemorate and promote the International Day through enhancing public awareness and education about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination.
