Germany to provide EUR 22 million for Mongolia's sustainable economic development, biodiversity

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Mongolia and Germany will remain committed to continue their development cooperation in alternative fields of common interests, such as in the promotion of the civil society and the private sector, even though the official development cooperation between the two countries will phase out in the upcoming years.
This was one of the main results of the German-Mongolian intergovernmental negotiations on development cooperation which took place on 18th and 19th November 2020 via video conference in Ulaanbaatar and Berlin.
Due to the progress Mongolia has made in the last decades, it was designated as a lower-middle income country and has resulted in a high-rank position in the Human Development Index. Therefore, Germany has decided to refocus its official development engagement to other regions in urgent need of support.
The Mongolian delegation was headed by Mr. Narantsogt, State Secretary of the Mongolian Ministry of Finance. Ms. Hammerschmidt, Director for Asia at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, led the German delegation.
The two parties agreed on the allocation of a final amount of 22 million euros for technical cooperation projects in the field of sustainable economic development, energy efficiency and biodiversity.
These projects will ensure that Germany’s engagement over the past nearly 30 years of development cooperation in Mongolia will continue to bring a positive and sustainable impact on the conditions in these respective sectors in Mongolia.
