Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Ts.Tsolmon, Head of the Ulaanbaatar city’s Agency to Combat Air Pollution, gave the latest update on the reserves of ‘refined’ coal briquette for the preparation of the upcoming winter season.
Since March 2019, the government has imposed a ban on the raw coal consumption in Ulaanbaatar city as an effort to reduce air pollution. And as a substitute, the Tavan Tolgoi Fuel state-run company has been supplying the ‘refined’ or ‘smokeless’ coal briquette to Ulaanbaatar city Ger district residents. Thanks to this measure, it is estimated that more than half of the city's air pollution has been decreased since 2019.
By an order of Ulaanbaatar City Governor, a month-long campaign has been launched to ensure preparation for the upcoming winter season. Within the framework of this campaign, instructions for proper domestic use of coal briquette and carbon monoxide detectors, and cautions about carbon monoxide poisoning caused by inadequate use of coal briquette are being given to 220,000 household families in Ger districts of Ulaanbaatar city, who have been using the refined coal briquette since last year.
Works are completed to build up reserves of coal briquette for winter use and in particular, 2,300 tons of coal briquette are stocked at five warehouses built with Ulaanbaatar city budget, 24,000 tons of coal briquettes are reserved by Tavan-Tolgoi Fuel LLC and another 18,000 tons at 29 leased warehouses around the city. In total, around 60,000 tons of coal briquettes are now stocked at 91 different locations in Ulaanbaatar city.
Ts.Tsolmon also emphasized that 15,131 CO detectors and cards for purchasing coal briquettes will be distributed to households of Songinokhairkhan, Bayanzurkh, and Khan-Uul districts that are newly included in the air quality improvement zone, starting September 7.
