Renowned Mongolian writer Lodongiin Tudev passes away

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. A leading writer, journalist and prominent figure in the Mongolian society and politics Lodongiin Tudev has passed away at the age of 85 due to serious illness. 


L.Tudev was born a herder’s son on February 9, 1935 in Gobi-Altai aimag and studied at a teacher training school and Mongolian State University of Education in Ulaanbaatar city between 1950-1956 and Moscow Academy of Social Sciences in 1964-1967. He earned a doctoral degree in social sciences in 1984.


Lodongiin Tudev served as a literary editor of the Unen (Truth) daily newspaper of the Mongolian People's Party in 1961 and chief editor of the Literature newspaper in 1962-1968 and deputy head and head of the Mongolian Writers’ Union in 1968-1975 and first secretary of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Youth Union of Mongolia in 1975-1984 and was appointed as an editor-in-chief of the Unen newspaper in 1984 and worked there for about a decade. 


He also spent more than 20 years of his life in the political and state affairs as a deputy of the People’s Great Khural, head of the Parliamentary group of Mongolia, member of International Parliamentary Union, chairman of the Mongolia’s Peace Committee and member of the World Peace Council. 


In 1992, Lodongiin Tudev played a role in developing the first democratic Constitution of Mongolia and in 1993, competed in the country’s first presidential election as a candidate of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party, but lost to P.Ochirbat. 


After the election, he founded ‘Dal’ newspaper and had been working as an editor-in-chief until his final days.


Regarded as one of the leaders of the Mongolian literature, Lodongiin Tudev wrote more than a thousand of literary works throughout his life, including novels, short stories, poems, essays and authored around 40 books of different genres, such as children, historical and fantasy. 


‘Mountain Stream’ (1960), "Relocation" (1964), ‘Discovering the world ...’ (1970), ‘Resettlement’ (1973) and ‘Temple without a roof’ (1986) are among his best-known works. He is also author of famous Mongolian films, ‘Before rising up the rank ‘(1965) and ‘Across the Gobi and the Khyangan’ (1981). 


Many of his works are translated into several foreign languages, including Russian, English, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Czech, German and Japanese.


Lodongiin Tudev was awarded the highest state prizes and honors, State Prize, Labor of Hero, Cultural Merit Artist and Order of Sukhbaatar, etc.
