New flyover opens for traffic with expectation of easing traffic jam
SocietyUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. In Ulaanbaatar, a new flyover from the Olympic Street to the Ikh Mongol Street crossing over the Narny Road and 406th railway level crossing opened for traffic on September 16. China Railway 20 Bureau Group Corporation worked as a main contractor of the flyover construction project with a total cost of USD 42.38 million, and Rostov LLC has been responsible for the consultancy work.
The flyover construction project incorporates developments of a complex bridge with a total length of 1,1 km, including the newly-launched 477-meter main flyover of a four lane highway in two-way as well as A, B and C ramps, a bridge over the Selbe River, lighting for 2.5-meter road, traffic light, pedestrian road, pedestrian bridge and surrounding green area.
As for the remaining parts of the complex, the new flyover will be connected to a road from its east side and ‘B’ traffic down to the Ikh Mongol Street will open on 25 September. Also, ‘C’ traffic to be linked to the Narny Bridge will be launched by the end of October. More than 300 engineers and workers from Mongolia and China are currently working to finish the construction. This new flyover, built on the intersection of the busiest and most populous districts of the city, is deemed to ensure traffic safety, reduce traffic congestion in the area by 30 percent, allowing more traffic flow in the city and enhance Ulaanbaatar city’s appearance.
Apart from its purpose to intensify traffic volumes in the capital city and reduce overall traffic congestion, the new bridge is also considered to tackle safety concerns caused by the former level crossing on an auto road. Further development works to widen and improve crossings, auto roads and pedestrian roads in the vicinity will be performed from next year, according to corresponding officials. The China Railway 20 Bureau Group Corporation has provided 50-100-year warranty for the new bridge complex and will be in charge of maintenance and repair works, as highlighted by the Ulaanbaatar city officials.
The opening ceremony of the new flyover, the main body of the complex, was attended by Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh, Mayor of Ulaanbaatar City S.Amarsaikhan, Ambassador of China to Mongolia Xing Haiming and other officials. Expressing his confidence that the new bridge will help to reduce the traffic congestion of the city, the Prime Minister highlighted that the bridge development is coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic ties of Mongolia and China and thanked for the people who are taking part in the project.
With a soft loan from China, other road development projects are ongoing to solve traffic jam, the most pressing issue of Ulaanbaatar city, including intersection road over the Tuul River, 4-lane bridges in Bayanzurkh and Songinokhairkhan districts and 26.7 km auto road and 3 km long bridge to Nalaikh district.
