Deputy Minister J.Saule discusses dzud forecasting with Japanese professor

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Deputy Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry J.Saule on February 13, met with Masataka Watanabe, Professor of Chuo University and Honorary Doctor of National University of Mongolia.

Prof. Dr. Masataka Watanabe has studied the global warming and climate change for many years. In recent years, he has been implementing a project on predicting dzud jointly with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, National University of Mongolia and Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Under the project, they forecast dzud risks with a probability of 85 percent through analysis of weather, soil, and vegetation conditions of the last two decades.

Mr. Masataka Watanabe informed the Deputy Minister about his aim of using advanced technologies to expand the project and reduce impact of dzud in advance. Moreover, he proposed to cooperate with the Ministry in carrying out a project on assisting livelihoods of herders by introducing non-electric solar-powered refrigerator for reserving meats before dzud and later exporting them.

For her part, Deputy Minister J.Saule backed the Professor’s proposal while commending his initiative to prevent and reduce dzud risk by means of a detailed study.
