Ambassador to Italy meets Prefect of Vatican Secret Archives

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Ambassador of Mongolia to Italy Ts.Jambaldorj met with Sergio Pagano, Roman Catholic bishop and Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives on July 4.

The Ambassador said that Mongolian scholars and scientists consider a number of historical letters and documents which show that the Great Mongol Empire used to communicate with the world countries especially with Roman Popes in 13th century, must be preserved in the Vatican Secret Archives and he remarked the Vatican side had handed over to Mongolia a copy of the letter of Guyeg Khaan sent to Pope Innocent IV in 1246 while asking to give Mongolia opportunities to get acquainted with historical materials being kept in the Archives and get the copies.

Ambassador Jambaldorj also mentioned that Mongolia has willingness to employ 1-2 Mongolian scholars who know Latin and Persian languages for conducting researches in the Archives for few months and in response Mr.Sergio Pagano said Mongolian scholars can be allowed to make researches in the Archives.

The bishop introduced a list of seven historical materials that demonstrate relations between Roman Popes and the Great Mongol Empire and showed an original letter of Il-Khan Abaqa of Ilkhanate, which is the oldest document written in traditional Mongolian script.
