Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Over the past years, the amount of solid waste in the country has increased by 500 thousand tons a year due to population growth, urbanization and industrialization. For example, 820 thousand tons of solid waste were produced in 2009, while it tripled by 2014 reaching 2.4 million tons a year.

According to a JICA survey, one citizen of the city produces 0,535-0.900 kg waste a day. 75 per cent of total waste is collected by the capital city waste maintenance company and 15 per cent is transported by individuals and organizations with their trucks and 5-10 per cent of waste is left without being transported.

Considering the current Waste Law as ineffective in handling waste to ensure environmental safety and protection, the Parliament discussed bill on revised waste law and approved it today, May 12.

The revised law includes new regulations that recollection, re-using or recycling of packages, containers and waste, produced by consumption of domestically produced or imported products would be the responsibility of manufacturers and importers. And a “producer of pollution pays for it” principal would be adhered to in covering any charges or costs for waste.

Moreover, the revised newly regulates hazardous waste management because the amount of hazardous waste increases dramatically due to the growth of imports of used vehicles, tires and lubricants and consumption of electronics and electric appliances. The law has tightened charges and penalty for breaching the legislation.
