Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Eight National Renewable Energy Forum is being held today, May 5, at the Corporate Convention Centre, Ulaanbaatar. The annual forum becomes a platform of discussion about the highlights of this year in the renewable energy sector, potential large-scale projects and presenting of results of projects underway, as well as discussing about necessary actions to be taken regarding the energy sector.

One of the key panelists of the Session I, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to Mongolia, Ms Elizabeth Barsacq underlined that the most important purpose of promoting the growth of renewable energy is to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission.

Mr Battulga, an officer of the National Security Council, mentioned that any country can exploit 20 percent of surface water flowing through the country’s territory, that Mongolia has a renewable energy resource which can supply three times more than China’s energy consumption, and that the price of electricity can go down to less than 3.0 cents if Mongolia realizes potential large-scale energy projects that are currently under discussion. He also asked if there are some political reasons to why mega projects, such as the Eg River Hydropower Plant Project, are still stagnant.

The Eg River project still needs to be studied further in the presence of Russian experts and needs to reflect the voices of the people who are living in the zones, which will be impacted by the realization of this projects, answered the Director of Strategy and Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Energy, Mr D.Chimeddorj.
In an interview with MONTSAME, Dr N.Enebish, manager of the Darkhan Solar Plant (10MW) Project, highlighted that Mongolia has a capacity to become a pillar producer of renewable energy in the Northeast Asian region.

“Mega solar and wind plants with a capacity of 10-100 GB, which are 10-100 times higher than the total energy consumption of Mongolia, can be built in the vast space of the Gobi Desert. Our Gobi has an advantage over other large deserts in the world, including Sahara and the desert of Arizona, for it is fundamentally researched for the last 18 years by a team of Mongolian and international scholars”, he added.

The forum, attracting more than 500 national and international guests, continues with discussions concerning the growth of Mongolia’s renewable energy sector and international cooperation; ways to accelerate the speed of renewable energy growth and to solve pressing issues; effects of renewable energy production in  a centralized energy grid of Mongolia; and renewable energy investment policies and their implementation.
