National Council on EITI reviews report
PoliticsUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ National Council on Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), headed by the Prime Minister, held a meeting on January 18 to review the 2014 annual reports, published on Sunday, and the mobilization of 2015 operational plans. The National Council consists of N.Enkhbayar, head of Strategy and Policy Planning Department of Ministry of Mining, Sh.Tsolmon, a coordinator of EITI working group, B.Batbold, a member of Board of Citizens Council on Environment and N.Algaa, the president of Mining Association.
EITI is joined by 48 countries, so far. Mongolia compiled its first annual report in 2006. The last annual report was the ninth report for Mongolian EITI, and the first to reflect data on artisanal mining.
As of December of 2014, 2,736 special permits are owned by 1,553 companies, 22 product sharing agreements on petroleum have been signed with 16 companies. The companies are obligatory to submit their annual reports to the transparency initiative. Only 992 companies have submitted their reports in timely manner.
In 2014, 496 private companies conducted explorations in 804 licensed areas, while 62 exploration were undertaken funded by government. Most expenditures on environmental rehabilitation was made by “Altandornod Mongol”, “Baganuur”, “Shivee Ovoo” and “Oyu Tolgoi”, occupying 74.1 percent of total cost for rehabilitation.
