Ulaanbaatar,
October 22, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The Fifth Thermal
Power Plant project will be implemented to reduce energy import dependency,
increase domestic supply, and introduce advanced technological solutions to the
production process.
According to the Capital City Governor’s Office, commissioning the plant will not only improve the capital’s air quality, particularly by reducing the number of chimneys in ger areas by 51,000, but will also introduce several advanced solutions to reduce environmental impact. For instance, the ash and slag generated by the plant will be stored, compacted, and properly managed in the ash pond. According to the feasibility study, the plant is expected to generate an average of 300,000 tons of ash and slag annually. It has been determined that this material can be utilized as a secondary raw material in the production of building materials such as cement, concrete, road slabs, and fillers. Furthermore, to reduce the emission of toxic smoke and gases, a flue gas desulfurization system will be installed, which will introduce a technology that uses limestone to reduce sulfur levels, utilizing 18,615 tons of limestone per year. Consequently, the amount of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides released into the air will decrease, thereby reducing illnesses caused by air pollution.
Furthermore, in order to
optimize the plant’s industrial water usage, plans include renovating the water
supply system, introducing technology to treat and reuse wastewater, and
utilizing a closed-loop water circulation system to reduce overall water
consumption, thereby limiting the environmental impact. This approach is
expected to have a positive effect on water scarcity and ecological balance.
The main source of energy in
Mongolia consists of coal-fired thermal power plants, which account for over 90
percent of the total energy production. As energy consumption rises, there is a
necessity to establish a reliable and stable source while simultaneously
increasing the efficiency of coal combustion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Therefore, implementing the Fifth Thermal Power Plant project, which is based
on modern advanced technology and incorporates environmentally friendly
solutions, is crucial for bringing about technological modernization in the
energy sector, ensuring sustainable development, and maintaining ecological
security.
