Mongolia to Strengthen Veterinary Services
Society
Ulaanbaatar, April 3, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The General Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Government of Mongolia, in collaboration with the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), hosted a conference in Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia, to discuss efforts to eliminate Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in livestock.
A global strategy to control and eradicate PPR was adopted in 2015, with the goal of fully eliminating the disease by 2030. This initiative also aims at improving veterinary services, minimizing the impact of PPR, and reducing the spread of other infectious diseases. The Government of Mongolia is committed to supporting this global effort. However, recent outbreaks in Mongolia and neighboring countries have highlighted the urgent need for stronger veterinary services and enhanced cross-border collaboration to effectively combat the disease.
In line with the second phase of the PPR global eradication program, an advanced epidemiological system has been introduced to track and analyze factors influencing the disease’s spread. This data-driven approach is expected to improve strategies for controlling and eradicating PPR. Hosting this conference in Mongolia provided an opportunity to highlight the country’s efforts in aligning its disease control measures with international standards and recommendations set by the WOAH. Additionally, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry of Mongolia emphasized that eliminating PPR would open new opportunities to expand exports.
