“Hustai National Park has become the park with most number of takhi horses in the world”

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On March 8, Minister of Environment and Tourism B.Bat-Erdene held a meeting with representatives of rangers and became acquainted with the operations of Hustai National Park. During the meeting, the Minister expressed his stance on putting no less than 30 percent of the country’s territory under the state’s special protection in aims of preserving wildlife and fauna.
With the most recent additions, 32.7 million hectares of land - 21 percent of the country’s territory, is now under state special protection. Hustai National Park is one of the protected sites.
“Hustai National Park has become the park with the most number of takhi horses in the world, and the highest density of deer and marmot population in Mongolia. As their population was able to grow due to active conservation efforts, we are also currently carrying out works to re-introduce a certain number of the animals in other parts of the country,” said the rangers.
To mention some of the features of Hustai National Park, which was established to reintroduce one of the rarest species in the world:
• Runs operations during all four seasons to introduce foreign and domestic tourists to how the takhi horses were reintroduced and offer opportunities to spot wildlife such as takhi, deers, and wolves,
• Reintroduced over 500 red deer fawns and over 1,000 marmots in other parts of the country since the 2000s. The environmental protection efforts are considered to be on the same level as an investment of about MNT 3 billion.
• Became a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2007.
