EnvironmentUlaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. An event was organized virtually on August 2-10 to hand over results of the Green Gold Animal Health Project of the Swiss Cooperation in Mongolia to authorities and federations of Pasture User Groups (PUGs) of seven aimags, where the project was implemented the longest. The aimags are Arkhangai, Bayankhongor, Bayan-Ulgii, Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan, Khovd and Uvs.
The participants highlighted that achievements and results of the
project, which was co-implemented for 17 years for sustainable rangeland and
herd management, are paving new roads for development opportunities.
During the event, local authorities and organizations shared
their experiences on the challenges they faced during the project and how they
overcame them. Uvs aimag’s governor Ch. Chimed highlighted, “Numerous best
practices have been adopted and embedded in the local policy and institutional
set up of local government organizations. These best practices will be
continually developed with the policy support. To name a few of those are
responsible rangeland management through establishment of rangeland use
agreements, capacity development of herders’ collective organizations for
better access to government services and marketing opportunities, animal health
traceability system and enactment of animal number taxation law to address
problems of over grazing and stocking density. As of 1 August 2021, Uvs aimag
herders have paid MNT 100.0 million in animal number tax, and it will be used
to continue consolidating best practices of the Green Gold Animal Health
Project to protect degraded rangelands, improve animal health and productivity,
and increase market access of herder households.”
