Adaptive capacity and risk management of rural communities to be enhanced
Environment
Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On March 12, Minister of Environment
and Tourism N.Urtnasan had a meeting with Elaine Conkievich, Resident
Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which Mongolia
has effectively cooperated with over the past 20 years in expanding the
protected area network, protecting biological species, adapting to climate
change, and strengthening good environmental governance.
They had discussions about deepening cooperation in not
only environment, but also tourism, formulating cooperation strategy, as well as a
climate change mitigation project, to be launched soon. The Ministry of Environment
and Tourism and UNDP are currently implementing three projects on wilderness,
climate change, and biological diversity.
Stressing that climate change has become a pressing issue
to not only Mongolia, but the world, Minister N.Urtnasan expressed hope that
the sides will successfully cooperate on the ‘Improving Adaptive Capacity and
Risk Management of Rural Communities in Mongolia’ project that will integrate
climate information into land and water use planning at the national and
sub-national levels; scale up climate-resilient water and soil management
practices for enhanced small scale herder resource management; and build herder
capacity to access markets for sustainably sourced, climate-resilient livestock
products.
The sides also exchanged views on opportunities for
cooperation in tourism. UNDP Resident Representative Elaine Conkievich said the
organization can provide support in increasing tourist arrivals by promoting
the beautiful nature and culture of Mongolia and reviving the sector after the
pandemic.
