Water Research Center to be established in Gobi region

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A feasibility study on establishment of Water Research Center is being jointly made by specialists and researchers from over 10 professional organizations including the Institute of Geography and Geoecology, the Water Authority and the Central Geological Laboratory. With foundation of the center, they aim to improve ground water research, analysis and monitoring in the Gobi region where mining activities are centralized.


Specifically, the new center will monitor water reserves of 350 thousand ha of land covering Umnugobi, Dundgobi and Dornogobi aimag. In the long term, it is planned to cover 544 thousand ha of land of five aimags and three river basins. Also, the center is expected to make its contribution in improving implementation and outcomes of river basin integrated water management plan as well as provincial and regional development programs.


The project was initiated by the Governor’s Office of Umnugobi aimag with a purpose to protect natural wealth in a way of monitoring water sources and usage of entities, factories, mining companies and herders in Gobi aimags and making analysis on the usage.


Construction work of the Water Research Center is planned to commence in 2021 and complete in 2022. Required funding for the construction is considered possible to be resolved with payments for the usage of water and springs collected in local budget.
