Darkhan-Uul /MONTSAME/. There are many important archaeological discoveries found in Mongolia that confirm the existence of animals on the territory thousands of years ago, and some are being kept at the Museum of Darkhan-Uul aimag.

One of them is a skull of 800,000 thousand-year-old woolly rhinoceros, an extinct species of rhinoceros, that was unearthed in Khongor soum of Darkhan-Uul aimag.

The exact location of the discovery is a place called ‘Khoshootei Tolgoi’ near the Zulzagiin River in Khongor soum. A herder from the 2nd bag of Khongor soum, Batsukh Gombo, who was spending the autumn season close to the Zulzagiin River first found the artifact while herding, and reported to the police and the local museum.

The fossil skull of the rhinocerotoidae sized 80 cm in length and 35 cm in width was discovered along with 8 teeth and 7 pieces of fragments separated from it as well as a part from a skull of another rhinocerotoidae reptile.
