A portrait of “Glorious Mother” selected in National Geographic Traveller Photography Competition

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ National Geographic Traveller UK magazine has presented the finalists from National Geographic Traveller Photography Competition, selected from more than 4,500 entries across four categories.
In a bid to discover the best British and Irish travel photographers of 2020, the magazine invited both amateurs and professionals to submit images taken over the past year in one of four categories: Cities; Landscapes; Nature; and People. Thousands of entries have been whittled down to a shortlist of just 12, with the category winners — and the overall grand prize winner — set to be announced on August 25.
A portrait of “Glorious mother” of Mongolia taken by photographer Kay Locket has been selected in a category “People”. In the work, Dugerjav, 68, a mother of eight children and 22 grandchildren, displays her Order of Glorious Motherhood medals. In Mongolia, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, motherhood is seen as a patriotic duty and incentivized by the government.
Another
two works also have been selected in the category “People” and they are portraits
of a Roma coppersmith living in Transylvania, Romania and dancers performing on
the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.
Pat Riddell, editor of National
Geographic Traveller, says: “While the coronavirus pandemic has greatly affected
our ability to travel, our desire to see the world is nevertheless
undiminished. This year’s competition is a window on the world we hope to
explore again as soon as it’s safe to do so, and is a reminder of the power and
emotion that travel photography can capture. From spectacular wildlife to
moving landscapes, the shortlist again demonstrates some of the UK’s best
talent behind the lens.”
