Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Minister of Foreign Affairs D.Tsogtbaatar met with Michel Forst, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders.

At the meeting, the sides exchanged views on human rights situation in Mongolia, bill on human rights defenders, business and human rights as well as progress of reforming law enforcement and judicial system of Mongolia.

Minister D.Tsogtbaatar introduced bill on human rights defenders initiated by him as a member of parliament and highlighted the importance of increasing awareness and information on human rights defenders and improving their legal framework. “Creating proper business environment is crucial to ensuring sustainable economic growth and providing jobs and income. In addition to it, since business grows where human rights are protected, we should consider business development issues as a complex,” he added.

In turn, UN Special Rapporteur Michel Forst said “Mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur has purposes to support and cooperate with the country for improving situations of human rights and human rights defenders. Before coming to Mongolia, I had positive view on conditions of human rights defenders. But, based on the talks of the people I met and observation and studies, I made a preliminary evaluation that the condition is not well. Therefore, I will stably collaborate with the Mongolian side in the future. Independent law on human rights defenders is very important mechanism to protect the people who are working for protecting human rights.”
