Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Speaker of the Parliament M.Enkhbold met with representatives led by Elizabeth Nyamayaro, Executive Director for UN Women and the head of HeForShe movement.

At the beginning of the meeting, Speaker M.Enkhbold expressed pleasure at the launch of the movement in Mongolia, which was held at the State House on July 8.

He emphasized "Ensuring human rights, cherishing gender equality and preventing women from violence are top priorities of the government policy and Mongolia was the first country to support UN Sustainable Development 2030 program and approved its own program. We strongly support women's participation in decision making level. For instance, political parties involve this issue in their rules and regulations. As for Mongolian People's Party, the majority in the parliament, 25 percent of its candidates for the parliament election shouldl be female. Today, Mongolian Parliament has 13 female members, which is the highest in the history"

However, he noted that there are a number of problems to focus. "Report of the gender-based violence prevalence survey, which was conducted by the National Statics Office of Mongolia (NSO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in 2017 showed heart-rending results. The Parliament has been working to reform legal environment for ensuring gender equality and protecting women from violence. We hope HeForShe Movement will support this effort" said the Speaker.

“Women face problems in every country, especially the USA. Political process in recent years has shown that women's participation in the politics is very important. We came to Mongolia in order to build a new bridge for HeForShe. I am sure that this will be a strong bridge to connect the movement between the USA and Mongolia” said former Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere, Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte.

Ms Elizabeth Nyamayaro emphasized, "I would like to underline MP A.Undraa, one of the leaders and supporters of our movement. Sustainable development goals will be achieved through providing equal rights and opportunities to women, who amounts 50 percent of the world population. UN General Assembly will touch gender issues in September. During this time, we will highlight Mongolia. I view that Mongolia’s involvement in the movement as a historic moment for achievement of gender equality goals"

Speaker informed the delegates that unofficial group of women is working in the Parliament and Mongolian parliament will support HeForShe movement.
