Deputy PM meets Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On July 3, The Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia U.Enkhtuvshin met with Mami Mizutori, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, who arrived in Mongolia to represent the Secretary-General at the second Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

Deputy PM expressed gratitude to the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and its regional office for their support in organizing the conference, noting Mongolia is honored to host the event. Furthermore, he mentioned that in order to implement the sustainable development goals as a member country of the UN, Mongolia has adopted a number of major development documents, such as sustainable development concept and three pillar development policy. He also noted that Mongolia focused on the implementation of Asia’s plan for Sendai Framework and carried out several works such as developing disaster management system, reforming legal environment and promoting public participation in disaster risk reduction. For instance, in 2017, the Parliament revised the Law on Disaster Protection, which established a system of disaster risk reduction at national and local levels, indentified roles and participation of stakeholders, improved the legal status and social protection of emergency officials and upgraded humanitarian aid coordination in times of disaster. In 2018, the Government approved an action plan for implementing a mid-term strategy for realization of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Mongolia.

Deputy PM stressed Mongolia's strategy of disaster risk reduction targets to prevention of disaster rather than post- disaster recovery, and expressed hope that the conference will be effective and bring significant results.

Ms Mami Mizutori emphasized that Mongolia hosting the second Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction under the theme ‘Preventing Disaster Risk: Protecting Sustainable Development' is the outcome of the efforts and expressed confidence that there will be a significant result for intensifying implementation of the Sendai Framework at regional level and strengthening the cooperation of regional countries.

Mongolian delegation led by the Deputy PM is to participate in the ministerial segment of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development to be held in New York on July 16-18. Mami Mizutori congratulated Mongolian delegates on their upcoming visit to New York for sharing Mongolia’s achievements in reducing disaster risks and learning experiences.
