Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/ On May 10, S.Batbold, Governor of the Capital and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar city, met with World Bank’s working team for safeguards preparation and appraisal.

During the meeting, Mayor S.Batbold underlined significant works conducted within the project ‘Ulaanbaatar Clean Air’, for instance outcomes of the actions to lower heat loss of houses of 200 households, which also saved the consumption of raw coal by 50 percent, and to create a legal environment to ban the sales and productions of high polluting stoves from April 1, 2017 as a result of the formulation of standards on household stoves and low-pressure stoves.

“Although first objectives of the project has been fulfilled 95 percent, the air pollution is still high-priority issue for Ulaanbaatar city. Therefore, we are grateful to the World Bank for accepting Mongolia’s request to realize the second phase of the project in order to keep the outcomes of the project implementation, expand its scope and increase public involvement in reduction of air pollution. When granting additional funding and disbursing money saved from the ongoing project, further comprehensive actions should be planned with correlation with Ulaanbaatar City policy and connecting the project actions with the city’s action to establish ‘Infrastructure Centers’ in the selected areas of ger district,” stressed the Mayor.

With the WB’s soft loan, Ulaanbaatar city government has been implementing the project since 2012.
