Agriculture Ministry focuses on food self-sufficiency

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Deputy Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry J.Saule attended the monthly  meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Mongolia on April 24.
 
Deputy Minister J.Saule presented about production of the sector, current state, further objectives and investment opportunities. Food, agriculture and light industry makes up 50 percent of gross domestic product, produces goods worth of about MNT 14 trillion a year and pays an important role in economy. The Ministry intends to satisfy population’s need of basic food commodities from domestic production and attaches attention on providing quality and safety of food at all stages, noted the Deputy Minister. The Ministry also aims to increase supply of some types of groceries such as fruits and rice and to export organic meat, milk and cashmere products and to boost agricultural eco-tourism in future.
 
Chairman of AmCham Mongolia Mr. Steve Potter stated “We appreciate that the Ministry is undertaking a very concrete policy, aimed at diversifying livestock intensification, reviving the food and light industry sector, and supporting the development and export of value-added agricultural products. Of all the non-mining sectors of the economy, agriculture represents the most significant in terms of creating employment opportunities, contributing to regional development, as well as the potential for export revenues and the reduction of imports through domestic substitution. AmCham Mongolia is committed to working with the Ministry and our members who operate in agriculture and light industry to build a sound and competitive agricultural and light industrial sector.”
