Umnugobi /MONTSAME/ What started as a simple humane gesture towards a female ibex with its kid has led to a rare human-wild animal bond in Nomgon soum of Umnugobi aimag.

Herder L.Enkh-Amgalan, who camps in a place called Khar Del in Kharmagtai bag, now looks after more than 80 ibexes since his first attempt to water the female ibex from his well eight years ago.

Surface water is scarce in Mongolia’s Gobi region. Although wild animals wouldn’t go near a human or human creation such as a water well, the number of ibexes continued to increase over the last eight years, thus reaching 80.

“The number has decreased in spring now that graze farther away. I also observe the arrival of their offsprings on the pasturelands of my sheep herd,” he said to D.Mishigsuren, MONTSAME correspondent in Umnugobi aimag. L.Enkh-Amgalan has been looking after his livestock for life.
