The Museum of Uvs aimag has an exhibit of old-age wrestling suit which was used by Ochiriin Tugjee from Khyargas soum. This suit is called ‘Shalbuur’ that is a kind of wrestling briefs.
“Wrestling styles of many nations might be originated from the Mongolian ancient wrestling which is named as ox grappling,” said Buyntogtokh Alagaa, a scholar who wrote the book ‘The Origin of Mongolian wrestling—The Ox grappling’.
He suggested several facts that prove a transformation of the Ox Grappling into modern time’s Mongolian national wrestling dates back from Xiongnu Empire. The Ox Grappling was a kind of wrestling where two contestants, who wore the briefs made of leather, step up on a stage and they wrestle like oxen. By the rule, one who get his opponent’s back touch the ground will become the winner.
