Int’l meeting of honor runs for 25th anniversary of first democratic elections

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The President Ts.Elbegdorj made the opening remarks at an international meeting of honor held Wednesday in the UB Shangri-La hotel dedicated to the 25th anniversary of first democratic election of Mongolia.

In his remarks, the Mr Elbegdorj said the 12th election of members of the People’s Khural and the 16th election of Local Councils took place on July 29, 1990 for the first time with many political parties. Besides the political parties, candidates from public organizations and independent candidates ran for the elections, and it has attracted the largest number of candidates, he underlined.

Since the first democratic elections, the Presidential and parliamentary elections have taken place six times each, he said.

At the meeting, the 17th President of the Republic of Korea Mr Lee Myung Bak congratulated people of Mongolia on the anniversary, and spoke about the friendly relations between Mongolia and S.Korea.

Moreover, video messages sounded from Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General; Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission; Heinz Fischer, the President of Austria; Park Geun-hye, the President of the Republic of Korea; Johann Schneider-Ammann, a Member of the Swiss Federal Council; Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India; Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan; Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD); John Kerry, the US Secretary of State; and Laurent Fabius, the Foreign Minister of France.
