We are changers advocacy work carried out in five aimags
SocietyUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ At an initiative of the Mongolian
National Association for
Wheelchair Users (MNAWU), Ministry of Labor and Social Protection under the support
of the Finnish Lutheran Overseas Mission (FLOM) organized an advocacy work under a motto ‘Influence today for a different tomorrow’ in Bayankhongor, Uvurkhangai,
Arkhangai, Khentii, Darkhan-Uul aimags. The advocacy work was aimed at ensuring equitable
social participation of people with disabilities, promoting the laws regulating their social and economic rights, thus, calling on them to actively participate
in social activities and to make positive changes to the society they are
living in.
The MNAWU, about their activities, said “According to official
statistics, people with disabilities represent 103630 people or 3.2 percent of Mongolia’s
total population. In order to encourage them and to ensure their rights, the
Parliament approved the Law on Human Rights of Persons with
Disabilities in 2016 and the National Program on Promoting Rights and
Participation and Development of Persons with Disabilities in 2017. As we
needed to locally promote these laws, the advocacy work was carried out in five
aimags. In scope of the activity, we have awarded local entities that support
the people with disabilities and offer accessible services to them and
organized a flash mob involving local youths, civil servants and people with
disabilities which attracted great interest. I am confident the advocacy
work has built positive attitude as it reached at least 3000 people in each aimag as a result that the flash mobs in the aimags were locally aired. I am also grateful to relevant
authorities of all five aimags for their collaboration and full support”
Besides the five aimags’ Governors and corresponding authorities, representatives of the Ministry of labor and
Social Protection and the General Agency for Development of Persons with
Disabilities took part in the event. They had a discussion about creating a
system for ensuring equitable social participation of the people with
disabilities, employment opportunities, some issues of concern as well as the
priority actions to be taken in rural areas.
