Collection of the National Museum of Mongolia: The Oldest Kurgan Stelae discovered in Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The oldest kurgan stelae discovered so far in Mongolia is the stelae relating to the Chemurkek culture that was discovered from a site named Yagshiin khuduu in Bulgan soum, Khovd aimag.


The stelae was discovered by the Mongolian-Russian joint research team in 2003. The Chermurkek people lived in the Altai region in the Early Bronze Age (BC 2500-2000).


Research on kurgan stelaes in Mongolia began to be conducted from 1889. Such stelaes have been found from every one of the 21 aimags, with over 500 being found so far.
