Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. This rare jade flute, being kept in the Museum of Umnugobi aimag was used to perform the well-known play "Saran Khukhuu" /Moon Cuckoo/ by Noyon Khutagt Danzanravjaa.


The flute which was made out of green-yellow jade stone is 68 cm long, weighs 480 grams and the silver ring is 4.4 cm long. The flute has 3 silver and 1 brass rings, 10 holes and multi-colored stringed ornaments from a silver brooch looped from the silver belt of the flute.


A man named Khaltar Semben gave the flute to his disciple, Unzad Lama Ch.Dashjamts of Doloon Temple, along with other items.


Ch.Dashjamts kept the jade flute intact until 1969, when he became seriously ill and died. It was obtained by his neighbor N.Luvsan and sold to the aimag’s museum in 1982. The jade flute was used to perform the play “Saran Khukhuu”, according to L.Majaa who wrote a book about Fifth Noyon Khutagt Danzanravjaa.


In 1985, the jade flute won a bronze medal in a national competition for the selection of rare and valuable artifacts of ethnography and folk art.
