UN, ADB to cooperate in development of ger area

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Ulaanbaatar City Master Plan reflected to establish six sub-centers with a view to make city development balanced. Within it, “Ulaanbaatar Urban Services and Ger Areas Development Investment Program” is being realized with financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Investment Bank.

 

With overall goal to ensure balanced development over the territory of the capital city and de-centralize by making the city multi-centered, works to building basic engineering infrastructure and social facilities are under implementation at stages.


ADB Country Director for Mongolia Pavit Ramachandran, UN Resident Coordinator in Mongolia Tapan Mishra and ADB Senior Urban development Specialist A.Heckmann got familiarized with construction works of the first phase of the program on the spot. Project coordinator D.Avirmed received the representatives, briefing the project process and exchanging opinions on the project outcomes and how to make projects targeted to ger areas coherent further.


Coordinating construction works that are underway in the ger areas with other projects and programs running by the UN would make it more effective, Mr. Pavit Ramachandran highlighted.


While, Mr. Tapan Mishra said “It is pleasant to see number of construction works including convenient kindergarten, business incubator training center, sport complex and garden park that are needed for citizens of the sub-center, are being carried out in ger areas and started commissioning. And the UN is possible to cooperate in empowering citizens based on the infrastructure and social facilities.”


In particular, there is room for running activities targeted to youth living in ger areas, upskilling parents and child protection joint response teams in directions of preventing violence and collaborating in environmental protection and creating green areas through activities and programs running by the UN affiliated organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF and UNHABITAT.  


The ““Ulaanbaatar Urban Services and Ger Areas Development Investment Program” is a long-term solution being made for the first time within the city renovation and development and the representatives agreed to cooperate in the program further.
