“Strengthening the domestic violence response in Mongolia” project is under implementation

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A project entitled “Strengthening the domestic violence response in Mongolia” is being carried out between 2019 and 2022 with financing from the International Development Law Organization and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada. The purpose of the project is to define challenges encountering to victims of gender-based violence, increasing access to receive legal assistance and raising public awareness on the matter.


According to a survey conducted in 2017 by the UNICEF and the National Statistical Office, 57.9 percent of married or cohabiting women have become victims of domestic violence.  


Within the project, a training on capacity building of court observers in domestic violence crime was held in partnership with the Judicial General Council on August 11-14.  It is of significance to introduce methodology to collect necessary and appropriate information from a neutral position without interfering in or influencing court proceeding and to improve public control in openness and transparency of the court.


And the training has aimed to empowering a total of 34 observers consisted of civil society and legal specialists to conduct judicial monitoring on how domestic violence crimes and cases are being resolved under victim-centered principle in primary criminal courts of Tuv, Khovd, Dornogobi, Uvurkhangai and Arkhangai aimags and four districts of Ulaanbaatar city.
