Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On 19th June, at 9:00am, at Ministry of Health (MOH), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and MOH have signed on the document agreed on implementing “the Project for Strengthening Post-Graduate Training for Medical Doctors and Nurses”.

This 4 years technical cooperation project will start in January 2021. In this project, JICA will contribute to improving the quality of health services in Mongolia. Currently, infectious disease of COVID-19 is affecting the healthy life of the people in the world. Strengthening the health system and the capacity of health professionals are significantly important to tackle with the issue on health sector.

JICA has been supported the improvement of the post-graduate training mainly for medical doctors in Mongolia since 2015. JICA will seamlessly continue the cooperation on health sector since the on-going project. The new project aims to expand the developed general practitioner training for medical doctors to nationwide in Mongolia and includes nurses as main cooperation target.

Nurses are required to take the important role in health services. As of 2018, there are 11,169 doctors and 12,344 nurses in Mongolia, but the number of nurses is not enough to provide the expected health services. The lack of well-trained nurses and training systems in accordance with the international standards are the major issues on Mongolian nurses. The Government of Mongolia plans to increase the ratio between doctors and nurses, 1:1.1 in 2018, to 1:2 by 2026 under “State Policy on Health (2017-2026)”. In addition to increasing nurses, it is also necessary to improve the training systems for them. JICA will support these big challenges and especially focus on training for new nurses, around 750 nurses graduate annually, in the new project.

This year, 2020, is also designated “International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife” by World Health Organization (WHO). In this regard, JICA also contributes to achieve universal health coverage through the cooperation with the Government of Mongolia.
