Permanent Representative to UN speaks at high-level meeting on nuclear weapons elimination

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations S.Sukhbold took part and delivered a speech at a high-level plenary meeting commemorating and promoting the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, which was held on September 26 during the general debate of the 74th session of UN General Assembly . 


In his speech, Ambassador S.Sukhbold noted that the total elimination of nuclear weapons is the only guarantee to prevent their use and protect against threats from nuclear weapons while underlining the significance of reinforcing steps on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons for international peace and security. 


“Establishment of nuclear-weapons-free zone is an effective way towards disarmament, non-proliferation and total elimination of nuclear weapons and Mongolia has achieved a wide international recognition for its nuclear-weapon-free status, which shows its efforts and contribution to nuclear non-proliferation” Mongolia’s permanent representative to the UN added. 


Mongolia is working as a coordinator of the 4th Conference of the Nuclear-weapon-free zones and Mongolia, a one-day conference to be held within the framework of the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York City. 


The International Year of Abolition of Nuclear Weapons has been celebrated every year since 2014 with a view to enhance public awareness about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination.


The high-level plenary meeting was attended by President of the 74th session of the General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutérres and representatives of the UN member states and non-governmental organizations.
