With the aim of reviving the tradition of eagle hunting and passing it on to the next generations, the ‘Winter of Nomads 2019 – Eagle Festival’ is taking place at Chingisiin Khuree Camp.

With the support of Ulaanbaatar Tourism Association, all the eagle hunters participating in the 11th Eagle Festival were brought to the city on the airplane of the Hunnu Air airline. Of the over 20 eagle hunters from 7 soums in Bayan-Ulgii aimag participating in the festival, the youngest was 14 years old.

Various contests, such as selecting the best dressed, calling their eagles, testing its skills with a fake stuffed animal, Kokpar (tug of war over goatskin while on horseback) as well as a contest to grab the silver coins laid on the ground while galloping on a horse, are taking place. On top of the events, the display of traditional Kazakh handcrafts was also what caught the guests’ attention.

Inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, one of the few countries to keep the traditional practice of falconry, which has been in existence among the Central Asian nomads for 6,000 years, is Mongolia.
