Joint Management Committee holds its 7th meeting

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The 7th Joint Coordination Committee meeting for the ‘Project for Strengthening the National Capacity of Earthquake Disaster Protection and Prevention in Mongolia’ jointly implemented by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) took place on February 1.

Deputy Chief of NEMA, Brigadier General G.Ariunbuyan and Director of the Risk Mitigation Team of JICA Environmental Department Ko Goto gave opening remarks.


Brigadier General G.Ariunbuyan highlighted that during the over two years the project has been implemented, significance was given to learning from the experience of Japan in reducing earthquake disaster risks, introducing certain practices by adapting it to Mongolia, improving the legal framework as well as introducing modern technology. He also noted that the necessary tools and equipment for assessment of earthquake resistance of buildings were donated to NEMA.

In the framework of the project a number of documents were developed including memorandums of understanding with disaster risk reduction organizations, guidelines for disaster protection planning, disaster risk assessment for buildings and infrastructure, and disaster spatial database, guidelines for teaching disaster risk reduction in general education schools, and educational and training programs at national and local levels.

In aims of enhancing cooperation among sectors and improving public participation, the book, ‘White Paper’, was published based on the government policy, program and operations on disaster protection and assessment of the current state.

At the end of the meeting, they discussed about the preparation stage progress of installing the equipment, which lets people physically experience a simulated earthquake, at the Ulaanbaatar Training and Methodology Center for Disaster Protection, and plan to develop the White Book for 2019.
